Picking my MOTM, from Liverpool’s victory over Ajax last night, wasn’t an easy one. Joe Gomez or even Andy Robertson could have received the award; both playing well for the Reds. For Gomez, a nervy start for the centre-back but as the game progressed he was able to deal with the Ajax press effectively.
As for Robertson, he linked up well with Mane and created a strong opportunity for Salah to score. The left-back was a real presence at both ends of the pitch for Liverpool. However, enlight of Liverpool’s defensive woes dominating the headlines this week; Fabinho for me takes the MOTM accolade.
He produced an immense performance for Liverpool last night, under real pressure with both Van Dijk and Matip out injured. The Reds needed, the Brazilian international to step up and lead, and he did. His calming influence aided Gomez into the game, and they both created a crucial partnership for Liverpool to secure the three points.
Throughout the game, he was solid in the air and kept the defence organised. He produced two great challenges in quick succession which thwarted the Ajax press, and who could forget that brilliant goal-line clearance.
Jurgen Klopp was quick to congratulate the midfielder, on his impressive defensive display. In his post-match interview he said, “I think. Fabinho can play the position, he likes playing it actually. If I asked him to play right‑back I don’t think he would enjoy it as much. In our situation, we have to keep the boys fit. But I’m really pleased about tonight. It gave him confidence for sure.
It was good but even Fabinho can play better. Joe and Fabinho need to get used to each other, they need to get used to the verbal demands of the position and help the midfield. It was a good performance but there is a lot to improve, and that is good. It was absolutely good tonight.”
Overall, a standout performance from the 26-year old, who is possibly staking his claim to be Van Dijk’s replacement!
