This game is a whole lot more important than many Reds fans had hoped for, just six days ago.
We now know, this tie takes on extra significance after Liverpool suffered a miserable loss to Atalanta last week, leaving the door ajar for this week’s visitors.
A draw would be needed tonight but history might suggest that Liverpool aren’t the best at playing for a draw!
So, despite only needing a point to progress to the Champions League knockout stages Jurgen Klopp will be going for a victory.
And that means picking a strong side to face Ajax at Anfield.
So ahead of the match this evening; I thought I would select my starting XI to face the Dutch side.
My team: (4-3-3) Alisson, Matip, Fabinho, Robertson, N Williams, Henderson, Jones, Wijnaldum, Mane, Salah and Firmino.
Defence would see, Joel Matip start this evening, who was of course rested at the weekend to pair with Fabinho at centre-back. While I am minded to rest Fabinho, for me I don’t think Liverpool can afford to do so.
Ditto for Andy Robertson who has to start on the left, and despite a tough few games, I would pick Neco Williams to start as a right-back.
In goal, Alisson is the preferred choice, whenever he is fit and available for Klopp.
Midfield options are of course limited, so for me, Liverpool should stick to a 4-3-3 formation.
It’s just been announced, that Jordan Henderson is a 2020 SPOTY nominee; many congratulations to the Liverpool skipper. For me, he is back as a starter against Ajax; his presence on the pitch against Brighton at the weekend, made a real difference for the Reds.
Henderson will allow Liverpool to dominate the midfield, alongside Curtis Jones who will help out the never-ending Gini Wijnaldum; who has been the unsung hero at times for Liverpool this season.
Up top, it’s time to revert to the tried and tested trio of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah.
However, with the five substitutions allowed tonight, don’t be surprised to see Klopp call upon Diogo Jota, Takumi Minamino, or Divock Origi for some game time this evening.
So, what is my score prediction for tonight?
Answer: Liverpool 2-1 Ajax
Klopp will be desperate to have Liverpool’s round of 16 signed, sealed, and delivered, as soon as possible.
It is difficult to see Liverpool producing a performance as poor as last weeks and despite their plethora of injuries, the Reds will have enough to get by what promises to be a tough match!
Only one thing left to say; COME ON THE REDS!
