Merseyside Derby Preview

Everton vs Liverpool

Goodison Park

17th of October 2020

Regarded, as one of English’s football most iconic and arguably the fiercest rivalries with a record of 21 red cards shown in their Premier League meetings; the Merseyside derby is a season highlight! The revival of the Toffee’s under Carlo Ancelotti has seen Everton’s best start to their season since early 1894. This has transformed this Merseyside match into a top billing clash!

The performances of striker Dominic Calvert Lewin whilst on international duty for England and the early season form of new signing James Rodriguez all point to an Everton team justifying their perfect start to their Premier League campaign. Speaking of DCL, he is the most in-form striker today ( Spur’s Son is close behind.) He has so far collected six PL goals and nine overall. The striker will be crucial to the Toffees showing on Saturday afternoon.

However, for Liverpool fresh from their 7-2 mauling by Aston Villa, the Red’s need to chip some of the rust off their game. It has been a mixed start for the champions with glimpses of last seasons winning form bubbling under the surface; it will be in no doubt that Klopp will have made the Villa game, an example as to why the team must learn that winning a league title is one thing retaining it, is another.

Everyone can and will expect a response from The Red’s, with Sadio Mane and newcomer Thaigo Alcantara, a welcome return for the team after both testings positive for Covid 19. Klopp may well look to captain Jordan Henderson and defender Joel Matip to add some steel and on-pitch leadership to the team. It all adds up to a tantalizing clash between the two of English’s greatest rivals and a derby that has early season significance not seen since the late 1980s.

Top game to look forward to at the weekend! Who would have thought it would be Everton protecting the 100% record!

It really was Mark, a top game to look forward to! Not the result I was hoping for in terms of the result for Liverpool but a much better display from Klopp’s men compared to her showing at Villa Park! Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate it! If you could keep on commenting, that would be great! My match report on Derby Day is now live!

Agree it should be the most competitive derby for quite a few years — can’t wait to roar the toffees to victory.

I’m sure you couldn’t wait, Vince to be roaring on the toffess! Was a good game, even if it was the desired outcome! But that challenge by Pickford on Van Djik was horrendous! Red card all the way! Anyway, thank you for the comment and please keep commenting! Really appreciate it! My match report on the game is now live!

House was full of passion and loud shouting. Larry’s Sunday lunch managed to calm the waters.
Speedy recovery to Virgil van Dijk.
